Manning Simons was born in Charleston in 1846. After attending the College of Charleston and serving as a courier in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he attended the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. He graduated in 1869, and stayed in Charleston to practice gynecology. Dr. Simons was a professor of anatomy, gynecology, and obstetrics at the Medical College of the State of South Carolina and helped organize the St. Francis Training School for Nurses.
